3.4.15: Formal Age-Graded Social Organization

In some societies, people experience their lives as a traversal of very formally established age sets or age grades. These are named classes or groups within society into which all people of an appropriate age and sex are placed (e.g., the warrior class among the Masai in Africa, or, possibly, college students in the US). Frequently, more gradations regulate central aspects of men’s lives than women’s. For example, in some societies adult men move through a series of stages, from unmarried man, through newly married man, to father, to political leader. Women of similar chronological ages may move only from the category of marriageable woman to wife/mother. Both may end up more equitably, in status of widower/widow.
