3.1.2: What to Expect

In this module, then, you will be introduced to central psychosocial and cultural topics, some of which expand upon issues and ideas raised in previous modules, some of which will appear again in slightly different form in subsequent modules. This module discusses the social, cultural and psychological ordering of ideas and actions around older people, from basic ideas and theories of aging, through the place of older people in society to the ways we mark and celebrate getting older. Attention is directed also to issues that cross-cut these dimensions, such as gender, ethnic or minority status, and socio-economic class. These are issues that help create and sustain divisions within society and make gerontology and geriatrics challenging but rich and rewarding fields of study and practice.

Rather than referencing every point as it is made here, a list of central readings is appended at the end. You will find the topics that are raised in this module presented in greater depth in those works. Where specific references appear, they either present specific data or salient studies, or refer to topics or viewpoints that are not always discussed in the generally available texts (Bengtson & Schaie, 1999; Cole, Achenbaum, Jakobi & Kastenbaum, 1993; Kertzer & Keith, 1984; Silverman, 1987) in the reference list.
