2.3.27: Clinically Important Age-Related Changes in the Genitourinary System (I)

Hormonal changes are important factors underlying the changes seen in the genitourinary system with age. However, it is also very important to realize that many medications as well as concurrent health conditions, such as hypertension and cardiovascular disease, can influence this system. Thus, many of the changes are amenable to intervention.

Given this information, common changes that are frequently seen in both men and women include:

  • The urethra is more likely to be colonized by gram negative organisms.
  • Alterations in mucosa lead to increased bacterial adherence.
  • Decreased blood flow may lead to longer time to orgasm.
